2009 Children's Unit Luncheon

INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE HOLDS ELEVENTH ANNUAL LUNCHEON

The IRC’s Children’s Unit benefit luncheon, held on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, in New York drew 275 guests in support of IRC’s global programs for children.  Scott Pelley, CBS News 60 Minutes correspondent and an IRC board member, was the host and principal speaker. Pelley described his work with the IRC as “one of the passions of his life,” and described how he came to be involved with the organization.  “Everywhere I went, all around the world, in every corner of the globe, whenever I got there, the IRC flag was already there,” he said.  He also led a panel discussion with Sarah Smith, head of the IRC’s children’s unit, and Eduardo Garcia Rolland, a child protection technical advisor who just returned from the Central African Republic.

IRC Overseers Sarah O’Hagan and Andy Brimmer, both members of the IRC board’s children's committee and the luncheon benefit committee, also spoke, as did IRC’s President George Rupp.  Rupp recently visited northern Uganda and he told the audience that the main hope of the people he met there was for a better life for their children. Many also expressed gratitude to the IRC for its help, Rupp said.
