2011: In South Sudan, helping a country emerge from a calamity

Last July 9, the Republic of South Sudan became the world’s newest nation: after nearly 40 years of continuous fighting, two civil wars, two million dead, and four million displaced, the South Sudanese finally laid claim to independence and freedom.
Now the country is in the midst of a perilous transition from fragile post-conflict state to robust member of the global family of nations. The International Rescue Committee has made a long-term commitment to help the South Sudanese create civil peace, economic development, and good governance.
Toward that end, the IRC is assisting more than 450,000 people across the country; operating three primary health care centers and 29 health clinics; and implementing job training and education programs that can strengthen the foundation of this hopeful new nation.
