A fifth grader building an American life
June 7, 2011
By The IRC
NBC affiliate WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, Virginia is following the evolution of three refugee families as they build their American life. The families -- the Bwisezes from Tanzania, the al Malhams from Iraq, and the Bhandaris from Nepal -- were all resettled by the International Rescue Committee.
In the latest story in the series, Rabina Bhandari is wrapping up her first full year of going to school in America as a fifth grader at Walker Upper Elementary in Charlottesville. When she arrived from Nepal Rabina barely spoke English. Now she's comfortable enough with the language to reach out and help other students.
