As the violence intensifies in Syria, civilians are forced to endure the punishing bombings and raids or flee their homes seeking safety across the border. In a recent interview the IRC's Bob Kitchen said, “It’s considered safer in Iraq these days than Syria. That gives you an idea of how bad things are.” more »

Germaine, a refugee from war-torn Republic of Congo, and her family were resettled by the IRC in Abilene, Texas, in 2007. With the goal of becoming a U.S. citizen, Germaine has enrolled in an IRC citizenship education program, studying English as a second language and American civics. more »

Decades of civil war and neglect left South Sudan one of the poorest and most undeveloped countries in the world. The IRC is providing health care, clean water and other assistance to South Sudanese who are returning home to rebuild their villages. more »

In Jordan, I visited IRC health clinics in Ramtha and Mafraq, cities close to the Syrian border, and met with three Syrian women who fled to Jordan after their husbands were killed and their dwellings outside of Homs destroyed. more »
