With the International Affairs budget facing deep cuts on Capitol Hill, investment in women and girls around the world has been in peril. Since International Women’s Day in March, our supporters rallied together to send over 123,000 emails to Congress on this issue, encouraging legislators to wake up to the fact that women and girls all over the world deserve to be more than numbers on a spreadsheet. more »

Protecting those persecuted because of their race, religion, nationality or political opinion is a proud American tradition. It is also a historically bipartisan issue in Congress. Today Congressman Gary Peters along with 19 other Members of Congress introduced a new piece of legislation that aims to improve the way the United States welcomes refugees. more »

Cynics occasionally refer to Haiti as “the Republic of NGOs,” claiming that the country has lots of well-intentioned non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with little to show for their goodwill. Fair enough. But I’m not a cynic. I firmly believe that the vibrancy of local organizations in Haiti can and will translate into meaningful development for the country. more »

Sad to say, measures legislated after 9/11 now restrict aid groups abroad and prevent people fleeing dictatorships from entering the United States as refugees. As the world backs opponents of Muammar Qadhafi in Libya, it’s time to review the impact of these laws: are they doing more harm than good? more »

Congress is out to cut foreign aid, but the public doesn’t necessarily agree. Pollsters find that when we Americans learn about specific aid programs, we support them. When we hear clear details, we favor aid programs guaranteed to save lives. But Congress keeps acting on the desires of a misinformed public rather than on the basis of reality. They should look at the facts. more »
