A former child soldier in South Sudan, Ador Riak Nyiel attended school for the first time in a refugee camp, eventually becoming a special needs teacher. Today he's enrolled in a pioneering IRC/University of Nairobi Master's degree program that aims to improve education for refugees. more »

Dario Waodiond lost the use of both his legs to polio at age 3. Today, he gets around via a hand-powered tricycle provided by the IRC and works as a medical assistant at an IRC hospital. more »

I am visiting the Asunaro Home, a low, white building perched on a small mountain above Rikuzentakata -- one of the worst-hit cities in Japan’s devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Established seven years ago, the facility offers people with autism and other mental disabilities opportunities to build vocational skills and earn an income. more »
