It’s been nearly a week now since the first cholera cases were detected in a rural area north of Port-au-Prince, and in the days following a major public information and prevention campaign has been launched. There is a sense that the situation may be stabilizing, but some experts and officials have warned that it may be too early for optimism. more »

Before the IRC restored their water system — which hadn’t functioned properly for around 10 years — residents of Kurmuk, in Ethiopa, had to travel nearly two miles to another village to bring back safe, but expensive, drinking water. more »

Today marks World Sight Day, an annual day of awareness to focus attention on blindness and visual impairment. Since 1997, the IRC has helped hundreds of thousands of visually impaired refugees and other victims of war restore their vision through a unique program that offers free glasses and access to eye surgery. more »

It is the rainy season in Southern Sudan. The annual floods don’t make life any easier in an area already struggling to recover from decades of civil war. But this year, the flooding was unusually severe. I recently had a chance to travel with an IRC mobile clinic team and speak with families who have been displaced by the floods. more »

The Mae Tao clinic, on the outskirts of the town of Mae Sot in northeastern Thailand, is the only source of medical care for thousands of Burmese along the volatile Thailand-Myanmar border. I visited the clinic this spring and took these photos. more »

In a rare reprieve from the heavy monsoon rains, Zubadia Razia, 20, walks through the mud and rubble that was once her home. She is looking for a suitcase she kept clothes in, but it is nowhere to be found. This area, near the city of Peshawar, was wiped out in Pakistan’s worst flooding in living memory. more »
