The majority of the nearly 700,000 earthquake survivors in Haiti who are still displaced are living in makeshift settlements on private land. Neighbors came to the rescue as a property owner prepared to lock out these children and families like theirs. more »

Last week, I wrote about the heart-wrenching generosity of Somali refugees in Dadaab, Kenya who are giving of what little they have to help newly arrived families in need. Today I want to pay tribute to the personal sacrifices of my IRC colleagues in Dadaab -- truly an outstanding group of nurses, nutritionists, doctors, social workers, and field office and logistics specialists. more »

Poor rains in the Horn and East Africa have led to crop failure, loss of livestock and soaring food prices -- and famine has been declared in five areas of southern Somalia. Somali refugees must walk for days to reach the Dolo Ado camps in Ethiopia. more »

It's hard to place a value on a goat in a place like Sindh, but it's no surprise that at a recent distribution of thousands of goats, thousands of flood-affected families waited patiently in line. Residents of the Pakistani province are still recovering from last year's devastating floods, which killed livestock and wiped out crops. I was in Sindh recently, for one of the distributions. more »

Many others have written about the unfathomable human suffering that is playing out in the Horn and East Africa due to the drought and famine. After visiting the IRC’s programs in Kenya no words seem adequate. The best thing I can offer is to share what is not being reported: the heart-wrenching charitable efforts of Somali refugees themselves. more »

Tamam, an IRC health manager in Chad, sent on these images of a recent sandstorm that hit Bahai -- a desert outpost where we aid refugees from Darfur. They really show the remote and extreme conditions in which IRC staff sometimes work in order to bring humanitarian aid to people who need it the most. more »

Today is World Humanitarian Day -- a celebration of people helping people. Every day humanitarian aid workers help millions of people around the world. Sitting here at my computer in the IRC's New York HQ office, I am in awe of my IRC colleagues and our partners and peers in the field who persevere through unimaginable circumstances in order to save lives... more »

Even before the floods hit, many people in Sindh did not have access to health care. Whatever clinics and medical equipment there had been was washed away by the floodwater. Rates of illnesses, including malaria and skin infections, shot up in the wake of the floods, with many people falling very sick. more »
