Even before the floods hit, many people in Sindh did not have access to health care. Whatever clinics and medical equipment there had been was washed away by the floodwater. Rates of illnesses, including malaria and skin infections, shot up in the wake of the floods, with many people falling very sick. more »

The United Nations has declared a famine in the Horn of Africa, surprising no one who works in the region. As early as August 2010 there were indications that a crisis loomed. Now more than 3.7 million Somalis, or half of the entire population, are in need of aid. more »

When Abdallah Ibrahim Jare, his wife Ishan and their four young children set out on foot on the 25-day trek from their home in Somalia to Kenya, Abdallah had no idea of the nightmare that lay ahead of him. Fifteen days into their journey, 30-year-old Ishan died. more »

Habiba, 29, told me her family was forced to leave because of the insecurity in Somalia and because they had lost livestock they depended on for income to the ongoing drought. In January they had 40 goats but by the end of June only 10 remained. They sold half of them on the way to Dadaab in exchange for money to buy food. more »

Fatuma, 25, arrived in Dadaab refugee camp four days ago by car with her mother and her five children. The young widow gave birth to her baby girl, Shire, on her way here. The family arrived without luggage -- it was stolen from the parked car late one night as they slept. more »

I took these photographs of actress and IRC Voice Rashida Jones this week as she was visiting the Tham Hin refugee camp in Thailand. The camp’s residents have fled war and upheaval in Myanmar and have lived in the camp for years, or in some cases, decades. more »
