The wind had already picked up by Thursday morning in Villambetta. It whipped around the tents and plastic tarp-covered shacks in the camp. Groups of children, grinning and oblivious to the worries of the adults, made kites by tying black plastic bags to string, hoisting them into the air. The wind carried them high. more »

It is the rainy season in Southern Sudan. The annual floods don’t make life any easier in an area already struggling to recover from decades of civil war. But this year, the flooding was unusually severe. I recently had a chance to travel with an IRC mobile clinic team and speak with families who have been displaced by the floods. more »

Wilio Jean thought he would never see his son, 4-year-old Wilji, again. They were separated after the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, but IRC case workers reunited them in August. more »

Elhamija Kadic fled war and persecution in Bosnia in 1992 and came to the United States with the help of the IRC. Today she works for the IRC in Atlanta helping other refugees from war-torn countries. When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, she helped coordinate the IRC's response. She spoke with me last week about that experience. more »

Photographer Jim Stawniak was on hand in fall 2005 when two families who lost homes to Hurricane Katrina -- Lola Freeman's from New Orleans and Vu Lam's from Biloxi, Mississippi -- moved into the new apartments the IRC found for them in Atlanta. more »
