Children of famine - CBS News video

Yesterday CBS Evening News and Scott Pelley visited a hospital for the children of the Somali famine run by the International Rescue Committee. IRC doctor Humphrey Musyoka told them that the treatment is often simple - fortified milk or nutrition through a feeding tube. "These children that we've seen in the hospital that look so critical, you can save them," Pelley said.

I am saddened and sickened

I am saddened and sickened about this situation going on right under the noses of the American public. While everyone is busy complaining of a credit downgrade, this crisis is happening. Consumer spending is at an all time high. We have to be able to come together to solve this problem. We can not sit here and let mankind perish like this. We must make the public aware of the situation by any means. The US is known to be a charitable country, if we are made aware of a crisis. We have to think of some creative means to be able to raise some money and awareness. If we could all go with out one take out meal, or 1 Starbucks coffee for a day and donate that money some how to a fund, we could make a big impact if we can all get on board. It is so easy to turn a blind eye, but we can not let this happen. Please let me know anyway I can help.

Thanks so much, Sara.

Thanks so much, Sara. Fortunately, on-the-scene reporting like that being done by CBS, CNN and other news outlets is finally helping to raise the profile of the drought crisis in East Africa for the U.S. public. We're also grateful that you and other supporters are helping to spread the word about humanitarian needs in the region through Twitter and other social  media. You are absolutely right -- just a  little bit of money from individual supporters can go a long way toward meeting those needs. That's why we're not only running our own emergency donation campaign but also encouraging supporters to set up personalized fundraising pages to share with their friends to help support the IRC's work in the drought zone. You can learn more about other good ways to help here.  Many thanks again.
