When a crisis strikes, maintaining vital services, such as education, can be incredibly challenging. Nowhere is this more true than in Turkana, a region of northwest Kenya which is suffering from one of the worst droughts of our time.

The ongoing drought in East Africa has had a devastating impact on the region, and Turkana, one of Kenya’s hottest, most arid and most remote regions, has been hit especially hard. After years of patchy rain, during the last year Turkana had almost no rainfall, putting the lives of thousands of people at risk.

During a drought of this magnitude, finding water, regardless of the amount or its quality, becomes the priority, even for children. Across Turkana hundreds of kids, some as young as five, have had to quit school to spend their days seeking out water to help their families survive.

As soon as the drought hit, one of the International Rescue Committee’s main priorities was delivering water, particularly to schools.
