This Earth Day, we're celebrating refugees from around the world who are helping to make their new communities in the United States a little bit greener. As part of the IRC's "New Roots" program in several US cities, these refugees are planting fresh produce -- which is hard to find in many neighborhoods -- to feed their families nutritious meals and, in some cases, sell in local farmers' markets. They've found a fan in First Lady Michelle Obama, who called the IRC-supported urban farm she visited last week in San Diego a "phenomenal" model for building healthy communities.

The gardens also give refugees a chance to reconnect with agricultural traditions they left behind when they fled war in their own countries --  and to share traditional tastes of home with their new friends and neighbors.  Check out these garden plots in Charlottesville, bursting with fresh flavors from Africa and Asia: Flickr photoset
