KATANGA PROVINCE, Democratic Republic of Congo -
In the Democratic Republic of Congo’s massive southern province of Katanga, the IRC's community-driven reconstruction program, ‘Tuungane,’ has been in place since 2007.
Josephine Selembe, who was part of her community's decision-making committee under the Tuungane framework, inspects the huge new market the community built. When it opens, she and other women will be able to sell products locally, rather than carry merchandise on their heads for many miles to the next town. Josephine hopes this will also boost local economy by attracting buyers from the entire region.
