BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Masons put the finishing coat on a new classroom at a school in Baghdad. The International Rescue Committee is funding both rehabilitation of schools and teacher training in much of Iraq. Prior to the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq had what was considered one of the best educational systems in the Middle East. Since then the quality of education has declined dramatically due to war, international trade sanctions, and the departure of many of Iraq's best teachers.
Give a Rescue Gift for the Holidays
War can leave schools in a shambles, wrecked and empty. You can help fill a classroom with chairs, tables, chalkboards — and students eager to learn. $240 can outfit a classroom in a war-torn region with the furniture and other materials needed to create a vibrant learning environment for children.
Your online gift will be matched dollar for dollar up to $1.68 million through December 31.
