Photo Share: Sewing -- and surviving -- in Congo
August 17, 2011
By The IRC
This lovely photo comes from Siziana Demian, the International Rescue Committee's media and information manager in the Democratic Republic of Congo:
In the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, severely affected by conflict for more than a decade, the IRC partners with local women’s associations to support and empower survivors of sexual violence and other vulnerable women. Apart from taking classes in reading and writing, women also gather once a week and learn how to sew and knit. The little money they get from selling their products allows them to be financially independent for the first time in their lives.
