Salt Lake City: A View of Home [Photo Share]
Photo: Jonathan Codell/The IRC |
| My colleague Jonathan Codell snapped this photo of a Burundian mother and her two daughters taking in the view from atop the main public library in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The family had just arrived and was beginning to learn its way around the city. Jonathan's job is to help newly arrived refugees settle into their new lives in Salt Lake City and connect them to community resources, like libraries, that can help ease the transition. Jonathan says the main library's terrace overlook and convenient location -- right across the street from the International Rescue Committee's local office -- make it a great vantage point for introducing refugees to their new home. You can learn more about refugees and resettlement here, and how to help in Salt Lake City here. |

Hello, Elisha. Kate, the IRC
Hello, Elisha. Kate, the IRC blog moderator, here. Thanks very much for your question. The United States accepts a limited number of refugees each year. You must approach the nearest office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR - http://www.unhcr.org/) for assistance. The UNHCR will determine if your case qualifies for resettlement to any of the international resettlement countries, including the United States. (The International Rescue Committee itself does not conduct direct refugee resettlement.) You can find more information about refugee status and resettlement on the IRC Web site here. Wishing you well!
