Sierra Leone: "The girls are being blamed" - IRC in the New York Times

"The girls are being blamed. If a girl is raped and she’s above 5, then it’s the way she was dressed. But we’ve had a girl of 2-and-a-half months who was raped. Was it the way her mom put her diaper on?”

-- The International Rescue Committee's Amie Kandeh, who runs women's programs in an IRC-run rape center in Freetown, Sierra Leone, speaking with award-winning journalist Nicholas D. Kristof.  More than one-quarter of the rape victims the center treats are 11 years old or younger.

Read Kristof's stunning Sunday New York Times column for the full story: "In This Rape Center, the Patient Was 3"

Who ARE these men?

Who ARE these men?

Varian Fry, the first field

Varian Fry, the first field operator for the IRC 70 years ago when it was called the Emergency Rescue Committee, would be more than horrified at this. As am I.

AS horrible as it sounds,

AS horrible as it sounds, it does not surprise me. Education is what those people need.

First feed the body. Then change the minds. I was a teacher in a very poor community in Argentina, people can change. They need help, need to learn skill, not hands out.
