Reading news headlines from Somalia, it is easy to think that here is a country without hope. But that impression is far from the truth. The people I have met here have an amazing capacity for living and getting on with their lives, despite abject poverty, a sense of lawlessness and other harsh realities they have to face daily. more »

World Sight Day

Today marks World Sight Day, an annual day of awareness to focus attention on blindness and visual impairment. Since 1997, the IRC has helped hundreds of thousands of visually impaired refugees and other victims of war restore their vision through a unique program that offers free glasses and access to eye surgery. more »

After Sudan floods, sleeping by the roadside

It is the rainy season in Southern Sudan. The annual floods don’t make life any easier in an area already struggling to recover from decades of civil war. But this year, the flooding was unusually severe. I recently had a chance to travel with an IRC mobile clinic team and speak with families who have been displaced by the floods. more »

When she arrived in the United States last month, Baghdad native Raeda Fatoohi became the 20,000th refugee to be welcomed by the IRC office in Atlanta. Raeda recently spoke with WABE radio for a story that also featured IRC executive director Ellen Beattie. more »

The IRC wrapped up our successful humanitarian mission in Georgia last week. We deployed emergency teams there in August, 2008, days after tensions between Georgia and Russia over the separatist enclave of South Ossetia escalated into a full-blown military conflict. more »

Wilio Jean thought he would never see his son, 4-year-old Wilji, again. They were separated after the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, but IRC case workers reunited them in August. more »

You might remember the One in 8 Million piece which ran last summer in the New York Times about Bhutanese refugee, Tika Chapagai, and his wife Chandra. Well, the series, as a whole, won an Emmy on Monday night. more »
