Today I visited two more refugee camps. Unlike Shimelba, the Mai Aini and Adi Harush camps are relatively new. Mai Aini was established in 2008 and has a population of more than 12,000 Eritrean refugees. Adi Harush is in its earliest start-up phase and faces many challenges. more »

I have been spending the last few days visiting refugee camps in northern Ethiopia with my wife Nancy, IRC board member Allen Moore, and the IRC’s country director in Ethiopia, David Murphy. It is very important for me to come to the field and I try as often as I can to visit programs both internationally and in the United States. more »

Today I waited in a line for five hours. I’ve never waited in line for that long – ever! But this was different. I decided to spend the morning with a friend and IRC colleague, Pasquale Ongwen, as he joined millions of others in Sudan to vote in an historic referendum on self-determination. more »

I’m a native of Petit Goave, Haiti. I am 30 years old. When I was 12, I witnessed the rape of my older sister, which caused her death. As I grew up I felt the need to fight against rape which was very common where I lived. When I was 18, my partner beat me but I knew nothing about my rights. I feel very motivated to work as an IRC volunteer because it is an opportunity to help other women facing situations like mine. more »

Here in Juba, there is excitement in the air as Sunday’s referendum on independence draws near. The roads are being cleaned, banners and posters promoting separation are on walls and billboards everywhere you turn -- I even saw a parade this morning as I came into the office. more »

I want to close 2010 by paying special tribute to the courageous members of the IRC field staff, including those working in our 22 U.S. resettlement offices. Many of these men and women work in dangerous and difficult circumstances to selflessly carry out our work. more »

Every day my IRC colleagues and I deal with numbers -- big numbers, small numbers, sobering numbers – numbers that add to the sum total of human suffering. But no matter how grim the statistics from the crisis zones where we work, there are other numbers that add up to one thing: hope. more »
