Today I visited two more refugee camps. Unlike Shimelba, the Mai Aini and Adi Harush camps are relatively new. Mai Aini was established in 2008 and has a population of more than 12,000 Eritrean refugees. Adi Harush is in its earliest start-up phase and faces many challenges. more »

Today I waited in a line for five hours. I’ve never waited in line for that long – ever! But this was different. I decided to spend the morning with a friend and IRC colleague, Pasquale Ongwen, as he joined millions of others in Sudan to vote in an historic referendum on self-determination. more »

I’m a native of Petit Goave, Haiti. I am 30 years old. When I was 12, I witnessed the rape of my older sister, which caused her death. As I grew up I felt the need to fight against rape which was very common where I lived. When I was 18, my partner beat me but I knew nothing about my rights. I feel very motivated to work as an IRC volunteer because it is an opportunity to help other women facing situations like mine. more »
