Today marks World Sight Day, an annual day of awareness to focus attention on blindness and visual impairment. Since 1997, the IRC has helped hundreds of thousands of visually impaired refugees and other victims of war restore their vision through a unique program that offers free glasses and access to eye surgery. more »

The Mae Tao clinic, on the outskirts of the town of Mae Sot in northeastern Thailand, is the only source of medical care for thousands of Burmese along the volatile Thailand-Myanmar border. I visited the clinic this spring and took these photos. more »

Ban Puta, a hamlet on the Thailand side of the border with Myanmar, is nestled on a small hill overlooking paddy fields and dense jungle foliage. Most people who live here have fled conflict and economic collapse in Myanmar for a more peaceful life in Thailand. more »

This week marks the 5th anniversary of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. Days after the tsunami struck on December 26, 2004, the IRC dispatched emergency teams to Indonesia's Aceh province. At the time, the IRC's Peter Biro wrote about a journey to Calang, a village that was virtually erased from the map. more »
