Over 80,000 Chadians who had been working in Libya returned home during 2011 in the wake of violence that erupted in the North African country a year ago. The IRC provided emergency medical care for migrants who arrived weak and sick after traveling more than 300 miles across the desert. more »

Tamam, an IRC health manager in Chad, sent on these images of a recent sandstorm that hit Bahai -- a desert outpost where we aid refugees from Darfur. They really show the remote and extreme conditions in which IRC staff sometimes work in order to bring humanitarian aid to people who need it the most. more »

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. And in this case it’s entirely true. In the bottle on the left, is water taken straight from Lake Cariari near Bahai in eastern Chad. On the right, is water taken from the lake that’s been filtered, treated and chlorinated by the IRC’s water treatment plant in nearby Oure Cassoni camp for Darfuri refugees.
