I wake up and get out of the blue mosquito net—no breakfast for me as it’s Ramadan—then make my way to one of the camp’s reception center, the first contact point for new arrivals. Hundreds of Somalis are already waiting to be processed and receive basic supplies. They have been walking for days, while fasting, to reach this destination. more »

Last week, I wrote about the heart-wrenching generosity of Somali refugees in Dadaab, Kenya who are giving of what little they have to help newly arrived families in need. Today I want to pay tribute to the personal sacrifices of my IRC colleagues in Dadaab -- truly an outstanding group of nurses, nutritionists, doctors, social workers, and field office and logistics specialists. more »

Yesterday CBS Evening News and Scott Pelley visited a hospital for the children of the Somali famine run by the IRC. IRC doctor Humphrey Musyoka told them that the treatment is often simple - fortified milk or nutrition through a feeding tube. "These children that we've seen in the hospital that look so critical, you can save them," Pelley said. more »

More than 1,300 refugees fleeing drought and famine in southern Somalia are arriving every day in the already overcrowded Dadaab refugee camp near the Kenya-Somalia border. Under such conditions infectious disease can spread quickly. The IRC's Peter Biro followed along and filmed as an IRC medical team vaccinated refugee children against polio and measles. more »

Seven-month-old Mihag, cradled in his mother's arms, clings on to life in an IRC hospital in Dadaab, Kenya. When he arrived, little Mihag weighed less than eight pounds -- the AP called him "the frail face of famine." But a day after treatment by IRC doctors he was breastfeeding again, which is a very good sign. more »
