One year ago, three-year-old Aden Abdallah Ibrahim arrived at the IRC hospital in the Dadaab refugee camp weighing just 11 pounds. His family, refugees from drought-stricken Somalia, had walked for 25 days to reach the camp. more »

Drought in the Sahel region of Africa could not come at a worse time for the nation of Mali. Its northern territory was forcibly taken over by insurgents early this year, and soon afterwards a coup displaced the country’s democratically elected government. more »

Last summer, tens of thousands of Somali refugees fled famine, drought and conflict in their own country, crossing the border to seek refuge in Dadaab. Seven-month-old Minhaj Gedi Farah, caught the attention of the world as “the face of the famine” when he arrived at the IRC’s ward for malnourished children. more »

One year ago today, the United Nations declared famine in six areas of Somalia, the result of consecutive seasons of poor rains, failed crops and lost livestock. The IRC responded quickly, scaling up programs and supporting the most vulnerable communities. more »
