Driving along the Japanese coast, you immediately see the scope of the destruction that followed the earthquake and the tsunami. It's far greater than pictures can convey. Amazingly, some houses are still standing, but as you get closer you can see that only their exterior walls are left -- the rooms inside were completely washed away. more »

The majority of the nearly 700,000 earthquake survivors in Haiti who are still displaced are living on private land -- and they can’t stay there forever. Photographer Jim Stawniak was on hand in fall 2005 when two families who lost homes to Hurricane Katrina -- Lola Freeman's from New Orleans and Vu Lam's from Biloxi, Mississippi -- moved into the new apartments the IRC found for them in Atlanta. more »
