More than 50,000 previously uprooted people had to vacate a camp just north of Goma when fighting resumed last week. Many more local residents were driven from their homes. Food, water and health care are scarce. more »

People displaced by Nigeria’s worst seasonal floods in 50 years have been able to start returning to their homes, the IRC's team on the ground reports. Many will return with no resources to begin recovery. more »

A week after Mohammed was born, he was abandoned by his parents and left in the care of an aunt, Assetou Diallo, who was already struggling to raise nine children. He and another of Assetou's children were diagnosed with malnutrition, malaria and pneumonia at an IRC clinic. more »

Those who remain face an increasingly desperate humanitarian situation with little access to food, clean water and medicine. For the past few years, the coastal town of Hobyo in central Somalia made news for all the wrong reasons—hijackings of cargo ships at sea and kidnappings of foreigners on land. Despite the dangers, the IRC launched a primary health care program there this July. more »
