Today -- International Women’s Day -- actors Sarah Wayne Callies, Morena Baccarin, Romola Garai, Téa Leoni and Alyssa Milano are joining the IRC to launch a social action pledge drive aimed at raising awareness about the challenges faced by women and girls around the world. more »

In Haiti, where violence against women has increased dramatically since the January 2010 earthquake, the IRC gives teenage girls safe places to go to talk with their peers and explore their feelings with trained counselors. more »

In October, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote two columns about the epidemic of child rape in Sierra Leone. His reports were heart-wrenching, describing girls of tender age requiring treatment at an IRC rape center. more »

“It is not your fault,” says the IRC’s Amie Kandeh, consoling a 14-year-old girl named Fulamatu. It’s an important message in a country where women and girls are regularly blamed for the rapes they suffer and assailants are rarely prosecuted. more »

Nicholas D. Kristof writes in the New York Times: "…the International Rescue Committee says that only one-half of 1 percent of the rapes it deals with in Sierra Leone lead to convictions. I soon saw the challenges first hand." more »
