Today is World AIDS Day. In Kenya, where the IRC assists refugees and local communities, HIV/AIDS hasn't been acknowledged as a problem in rural areas such as Turkana. more »

An IRC team restocked this oral rehydration kiosk in Kawoussel camp in the Martissant district of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with 500 sachets of oral rehydration salts, vital for the treatment of dehydration caused by diarrhea, and the first crucial response in any suspected case of cholera. more »

As of Sunday, the latest figures released by Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population showed 1,034 confirmed cholera deaths and 16,799 people hospitalized with suspected cases of cholera. A few of those cases have popped up in camps served by the IRC—including at one camp just down the road. more »

As the new Haiti advocacy officer with the IRC, I recently traveled to Haiti to meet with our field staff and learn more about the impact of our work. My trip happened to coincide with Haiti’s first outbreak of cholera, a water-borne disease that can cause dehydration and death within hours if left untreated. more »

Cholera is a serious threat to the more than one million earthquake survivors living in crowded tent settlements around Port-au-Prince. That's why prevention activities are in full gear in the 30 camps where the IRC currently assists some 100,000 people. more »
