The majority of the nearly 700,000 earthquake survivors in Haiti who are still displaced are living in makeshift settlements on private land. Neighbors came to the rescue as a property owner prepared to lock out these children and families like theirs. more »

Last week, I wrote about the heart-wrenching generosity of Somali refugees in Dadaab, Kenya who are giving of what little they have to help newly arrived families in need. Today I want to pay tribute to the personal sacrifices of my IRC colleagues in Dadaab -- truly an outstanding group of nurses, nutritionists, doctors, social workers, and field office and logistics specialists. more »

Many others have written about the unfathomable human suffering that is playing out in the Horn and East Africa due to the drought and famine. After visiting the IRC’s programs in Kenya no words seem adequate. The best thing I can offer is to share what is not being reported: the heart-wrenching charitable efforts of Somali refugees themselves. more »

Tamam, an IRC health manager in Chad, sent on these images of a recent sandstorm that hit Bahai -- a desert outpost where we aid refugees from Darfur. They really show the remote and extreme conditions in which IRC staff sometimes work in order to bring humanitarian aid to people who need it the most. more »
