Recently I visited Zorgowee, a Liberian town where the IRC is providing emergency aid to refugees who fled the violence in Ivory Coast. There I met Kou Wonbah, a Liberian mother of three who told me she feels a particular connection to these uprooted Ivorians. Kou was once a refugee herself. more »

In the fall of 2009, Chet Nath Timsina’s parents, Dill Ram, 66, Man Maya, 63, and his youngest brother, Om, 22, arrived in New York from the refugee camp in Nepal where they had been living for 18 years. more »

Congress is out to cut foreign aid, but the public doesn’t necessarily agree. Pollsters find that when we Americans learn about specific aid programs, we support them. When we hear clear details, we favor aid programs guaranteed to save lives. But Congress keeps acting on the desires of a misinformed public rather than on the basis of reality. They should look at the facts. more »

Today I visited two more refugee camps. Unlike Shimelba, the Mai Aini and Adi Harush camps are relatively new. Mai Aini was established in 2008 and has a population of more than 12,000 Eritrean refugees. Adi Harush is in its earliest start-up phase and faces many challenges. more »

I spent the second day of my visit to northern Ethiopia with the refugee children and young people in Shimelba. The IRC is providing education for all age groups in the camp, from pre-school to adults. We are also providing vocational and skills training. more »

I have been spending the last few days visiting refugee camps in northern Ethiopia with my wife Nancy, IRC board member Allen Moore, and the IRC’s country director in Ethiopia, David Murphy. It is very important for me to come to the field and I try as often as I can to visit programs both internationally and in the United States. more »
