Six months ago I stood in line for five hours with my friend and colleague Pasquale Ongwen in Juba as he waited to cast his vote in the referendum which would determine whether South Sudan would split from the north. Fast-forward six months and here I was with Pasquale again, this time in a crowd of tens of thousands. more »

The IRC’s country director in South Sudan, Susan Purdin, has been invited to the official Independence Day ceremony tomorrow where she will join heads of state and dignitaries from all over the world including Colin Powell and former President Jimmy Carter, as well as celebrities such as George Clooney. more »

As an American, I’ve enjoyed many Fourth of July celebrations, from my hometown near Fresno, California to New York City, when I worked at the headquarters of the IRC, and towns and cities in-between. But this year, along with my colleagues here in Juba, I am looking forward to the Ninth of July. more »
