This summer I traveled to the Dadaab region in Kenya, where three refugee camps—among the largest in the world—host nearly 300,000 refugees. In the camps, I met refugee women who talked with me about their struggle to find enough firewood to cook for their families. more »

A new report by the IRC, Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) and Refugee Consortium of Kenya (RCK) says that tens of thousands of urban refugees in Kenya face regular harassment, discrimination and poverty. more »

On World AIDS Day the IRC organized a large march of men, women and children through Lodwar Town in northwest Kenya to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. One of the marchers had a very personal story to tell, as Peter tested positive for HIV in 2007. more »

Education is a key component of the IRC’s health programs. So staff recently gave a talk in Kakuma refugee camp on the medical complications surrounding pregnancy in young girls and female circumcision. One of the audience members – Somali refugee Kaho Ahmed Gesso – found the talk very welcome. more »

Elizabeth remembers the first day she went to be tested for HIV. “It was frightening and I walked up to the door of the testing center but I didn’t go in,” she admits. On the second day, Elizabeth managed to pluck up the courage to be tested and discovered she was positive. more »

In her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, actress Angelina Jolie visited an IRC hospital in a refugee camp complex in Dadaab, Kenya, on September 12. The U.N. said she was there to call attention to the situation of its 285,000 refugees, most of whom fled war-torn Somalia. more »

Nothing quite prepared me for my first encounter with a severely malnourished child. On a recent visit to the Dadaab refugee camp in eastern Kenya, an IRC doctor showed me into the Hagadera hospital, where the IRC treats malnourished children. more »
