Today I waited in a line for five hours. I’ve never waited in line for that long – ever! But this was different. I decided to spend the morning with a friend and IRC colleague, Pasquale Ongwen, as he joined millions of others in Sudan to vote in an historic referendum on self-determination. more »

Today -- January 9, 2011 -- Southern Sudan is holding a referendum in which its people will decide whether to remain part of a united Sudan, Africa's largest nation, or to secede and become the world's newest independent country. The IRC is preparing for every likely scenario that may arise in the aftermath of the referendum in Southern Sudan. Over the last few months our regional team based in Nairobi, has been coordinating contingency planning meetings with colleagues in Southern Sudan and neighboring Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. more »

Here in Juba, there is excitement in the air as Sunday’s referendum on independence draws near. The roads are being cleaned, banners and posters promoting separation are on walls and billboards everywhere you turn -- I even saw a parade this morning as I came into the office. more »
