I met Madina Aden, a 36-year-old mother of five, with her two sons at the mobile clinic run by the IRC on the outskirts of the Hagadera refugee camp in northwestern Kenya. We were treating newly arrived refugees -- families who had fled drought and insecurity in neighboring Somalia. more »

Fatuma, 25, arrived in Dadaab refugee camp four days ago by car with her mother and her five children. The young widow gave birth to her baby girl, Shire, on her way here. The family arrived without luggage -- it was stolen from the parked car late one night as they slept. more »

From my perch atop a twenty foot high clay mound, I am surrounded by a sea of dusty white. I’m looking out over the close to thirty thousand tents that comprise the Jalozai IDP Camp outside of Peshawar. For those of you unfamiliar with refugee acronyms, IDP stands for “internally displaced person.” There are an estimated seventy thousand of them at Jalozai. more »

Today I visited two more refugee camps. Unlike Shimelba, the Mai Aini and Adi Harush camps are relatively new. Mai Aini was established in 2008 and has a population of more than 12,000 Eritrean refugees. Adi Harush is in its earliest start-up phase and faces many challenges. more »

I spent the second day of my visit to northern Ethiopia with the refugee children and young people in Shimelba. The IRC is providing education for all age groups in the camp, from pre-school to adults. We are also providing vocational and skills training. more »

I have been spending the last few days visiting refugee camps in northern Ethiopia with my wife Nancy, IRC board member Allen Moore, and the IRC’s country director in Ethiopia, David Murphy. It is very important for me to come to the field and I try as often as I can to visit programs both internationally and in the United States. more »

Female genital mutilation is common among certain groups of refugees in Northern Ethiopia. Kibrom describes what happened when a group of community leaders were given the opportunity to examine and reflect on the harmful aspects of this traditional practice. more »
