In his 30-year career at the IRC, New York-based employment specialist Jimmy Lu has helped more than 4,000 refugees from Kosovo, Myanmar, Bhutan, Tibet, Iraq and West Africa find work, even in the toughest job markets. When she arrived in the United States last month, Baghdad native Raeda Fatoohi became the 20,000th refugee to be welcomed by the IRC office in Atlanta. Raeda recently spoke with WABE radio for a story that also featured IRC executive director Ellen Beattie. more »

You might remember the One in 8 Million piece which ran last summer in the New York Times about Bhutanese refugee, Tika Chapagai, and his wife Chandra. Well, the series, as a whole, won an Emmy on Monday night. more »

Problematic changes in the Supplemental Social Security Income program may cut off the incomes of vulnerable refugees. The IRC’s Bob Carey says the changes run “counter to the humanitarian principles” on which the U.S. accepted the refugees. more »

Elhamija Kadic fled war and persecution in Bosnia in 1992 and came to the United States with the help of the IRC. Today she works for the IRC in Atlanta helping other refugees from war-torn countries. When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, she helped coordinate the IRC's response. She spoke with me last week about that experience. more »
