As Hurricane Irene makes its way up the East Coast of the United States, several cities where IRC aids resettled refugees sit right in the projected path of the storm. We’re battening down the hatches in these offices and helping refugees and IRC staff to prepare. more »

On August 3, the first-ever Refugee Congress held in the United States took place in Washington, D.C. The event was the brainchild of the UN Refugee Agency's (UNHCR's) Washington office. The IRC was one of several private agencies that stepped forward in support -- I was invited to attend as an observer. more »

A heartwarming piece about an Eritrean refugee, Idris Ismail, resettled by the IRC, who was determined to bring his daughter, Nura, to the United States. It took 5 years, but she arrived last Thursday evening. more »

Rabina Bhandari is wrapping up her first full year of going to school in America as a fifth grader at Walker Upper Elementary in Charlottesville. When she arrived from Nepal Rabina barely spoke English. Now she's comfortable enough with the language to reach out and help other students. more »

Bob Montgomery, the executive director of the IRC in San Diego, recently visited the White House as a "Champion of Change." While there, he participated in a round-table meeting with government officials and other Champion of Change awardees. He also recorded a video about the importance of equal treatment for all in this country -- whether foreign-born or not. more »

Ernst Leo’s wife and oldest daughter were killed when their apartment collapsed in the earthquake that devastated Haiti’s capital on January 12, 2010. His younger daughter was trapped under the rubble for two days before she was rescued; her right arm had to be amputated. Today, the family is building a new life in Miami with the IRC’s support. more »

Imagine giving birth in a foreign country far from home, unable to ask questions during delivery, perhaps without the benefit of your family to help you. An IRC pregnancy support group in Baltimore introduces expectant refugee mothers to birthing and baby care practices in the United States, and gives them a place to ask questions and meet others in their position. more »
