In an unassuming house on the outskirts of the Thai city of Mae Sot lies the office of Social Action for Women (SAW), an IRC-supported organization that helps survivors of rape, domestic violence, trafficking and other abuse.

On a recent visit to their shelter, I met Ngelay, a 16-year-old Burmese girl who narrowly escaped being sold into marriage by her mother. Read the full story here.

SAW also shelters around 200 orphaned Burmese children, many of who have lost their parents to AIDS. Photo: Peter Biro/The IRC.
