This Week's Voices: "Man is here for the sake of other men"

By The IRC
An American branch of the European-based International Relief Association was founded at the suggestion of Albert Einstein to assist those suffering under the Nazis. That organization would grow into today's International Rescue Committee.

A word of reflection from Albert Einstein that really resonated with us on World Volunteer Day (December 5) — plus, other notable quotes touching on the work of the International Rescue Committee around the world:
“.. there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men.”
- Albert Einstein, who played an important part in the IRC's founding in 1933.
“The IRC has really helped us. Otherwise, we would have lost our child. Now, I have hope and know that Lokor will grow into something good.”
- Ekitela Logiel, whose severely malnourished three-year-old daughter was treated by the IRC in drought-stricken Turkana, Kenya.
"It is so vital that children, even in situations that are hard, understand that there are things within their control and choices that they can make. IRC spaces let them know that they aren't powerless.”
- IRC Voice Jencarlos Canela, speaking about an IRC-run “child-friendly space” he visited this week in Haiti’s earthquake-ravaged capital, Port-au-Prince.
“The IRC is the only global humanitarian aid organization with a team focused specifically on ending violence against women and girls.”
- Heidi Lehmann, who leads the IRC’s work protecting women and girls from sexual violence during conflict and disaster. She says there has been a four-fold increase in reports of sexual violence since the start of the Somalia famine in June.
"This is the best country, even if sometimes it's hard. You have to be a hard worker. Our life was in trouble, we have been given hope for life."
- Vincent Hakizimana, who was invited to resettle in Atlanta, Georgia with his family after he and his wife were brutally attacked in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo.
"I love America for this reason, freedom."
- Kamila Abdul Nabi, who fled Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, telling CBS Atlanta about her new start in the United States and how she has realized a lifelong dream to own a business.
"Choosing the perfect holiday gift is one of life’s greater challenges, modestly more difficult than earning a Ph.D. in astrophysics. So it is time for my annual gift guide. For starters, the Web sites of the major humanitarian organizations offer alluring holiday gifts. Through the International Rescue Committee, $30 buys a flock of chickens for a needy family."
- Nicholas D. Kristof, recommending an IRC Rescue Gift in his annual New York Times column on great charities and meaningful gifts that last. You can see more great mentions of Rescue Gifts here.
