In Liberia, changing men's attitudes toward women to help end domestic violence ... plus other notable quotes touching on the International Rescue Committee's work around the world:
“Something is wrong with our mentality as men and we have to change.”
- A Liberian pastor who took part in a recent training organized by the IRC to help change attitudes that foster domestic violence. The IRC's Commission on Domestic Violence visited Liberia and Sierra Leone this month to investigate and raise awareness about the most common and destructive form of violence women experience.
“Before I had this well, it was hard. I had no access to safe water."
- Ellah Bhasira, a 67-year-old widow who lives in the Mutasa District of eastern Zimbabwe. The IRC has repaired or upgraded 274 wells throughout the district.
"This is not the classic refugee scenario, where those in need are clustered together in camps. Here, they are spread out in both urban and rural areas. Simply finding them will be challenging, and given their fear of retribution, persuading them to register them for support may be difficult."
- Luan Meraku, IRC deputy regional director, on the challenges aid workers face in Jordan supporting those who have fled surging violence in neighboring Syria.
