International Rescue Committee blindness prevention coordinator Bayleyegn Birhanu on an IRC program that is helping children in Ethiopia see for the first time — plus, other notable quotes touching on the IRC's work around the world:

"Just two days after recuperating from [cataract] surgery Tigist was exploring the hospital with her growing vision, her reactions a mixture of shock and joy. As she got used to the light she started to laugh. When she saw her own shadow for the first time she shrieked in surprise."

- Bayleyegn Birhanu, an IRC blindness prevention coordinator, blogging about an IRC program that helped a 10-year-old girl in Ethiopia see for the first time.

"Our projects succeed over the long-term because they reflect the priorities of local residents and instill pride and ownership."

- IRC president George Rupp, blogging about progress in the Democratic Republic Congo, where the IRC takes a community-driven approach.

“His mother never thought he would recover.”

- IRC nurse-nutritionist Sirat Amin, who monitored 7-month-old Somali refugee Minhaj Gedi Farah’s extraordinary recovery from life-threatening malnourishment, anemia, and tuberculosis.

“The Iraqi government has made great strides in developing a strategy to address the needs of the displaced and should bring its own resources to bear, but it will require ongoing and intensive support” from the international community.

- Mike Young, who oversees the IRC’s relief programs in the Middle East and Asia. Three million Iraqis are displaced and desperate and tens of thousands of others are in danger because they worked for the U.S. military.

"As one who personally knew many of the IRC’s key figures of the 1930s and 1940s — men and women of conscience and courage — I can easily see the parallel between our current work and our early efforts assisting people targeted by the Nazis."

- Al Kastner, the IRC’s resident historian and archivist.  He joined the IRC in 1967 and now volunteers his time as a member of the Board of Overseers.

“When disasters strike, IRC is often one of the first to spring into action because they are so often already there with years of on the ground experience. They use a very high percentage of my donations for programs and services, and I like that.”
