The IRC is preparing for every likely scenario that may arise in the aftermath of the referendum in Southern Sudan. A young girl, as young as thirteen years old, is forced to marry someone. In this case she will not have an opportunity to go to school, and in most intances she is even pulled out of school... to start her new life with someone she doesn't know usually. more »

We were having a meeting and one of the participants noticed a tatoo that I have ... All were like, "Oh, we have a tatoo, too." ... They were calling me their American sister because I'm one of the few American black women that they've met ... I was excited. It was a bonding experience. So, sure, "Can I see your tatoo?" more »

In past updates, I have described the Democratic Republic of Congo as the site of the world’s largest civil war, a conflict that has led to the death of more than five million people. This year I am able to tell a more positive story about Congo. more »

We work with a lot of women who are just going about their business ... they're in their fields, they're in their homes, taking care of their children — and armed groups come through and target these women for rape... more »
