Today I visited two more refugee camps. Unlike Shimelba, the Mai Aini and Adi Harush camps are relatively new. Mai Aini was established in 2008 and has a population of more than 12,000 Eritrean refugees. Adi Harush is in its earliest start-up phase and faces many challenges. more »

It is very important for me to come to the field and I try as often as I can to visit programs both internationally and in the United States. more »

Food is scarce in Ethiopia, where most of the population lives in rural, drought-prone areas in a state of chronic poverty. In 2010, the Government of Ethiopia identified 5.2 million people in need of emergency food aid. Not surprisingly, this hunger crisis also impacts the thousands of refugees living just within Ethiopia’s borders. more »

In a small, thatched hut in a refugee camp on the Ethiopian border with Somalia, a group of women is having an animated discussion about the appropriate age for marriage. Miryama, a 16-year-old holding a small baby of her own, says she won’t choose the same path for her daughter that she took herself. Like many girls in this community, Miryama was forced to abandon school when she was just 14 to marry an older man. more »
