Mohamed is 15 and comes from Kismayo in Somalia. Dahir says: “My father died in the fighting – he wasn’t a soldier, our village was attacked. I also lost my mother during the civil war and I don’t know where she is." more »

Eighteen-year-old Iftin Mohamed dropped out of school when she was just ten or eleven. (Although school is free, families say they have to provide materials like notebooks and pens.) Iftin now has a ten-month old daughter, Magal, who’s been struggling to get over an infection. more »

More than 244,000 Somali refugees have fled the ongoing violence and sought shelter in Dadaab in eastern Kenya, where the IRC launched health programs last month. I was therefore very interested in visiting the area during my trip to Kenya. more »

I next visited Kenya’s northwest, the Turkana region, to observe the IRC’s varying work with local communities. The contrast with urban Nairobi is striking. As we drive the one hour from Lodwar to Kalokol, the heat is intense and the terrain is almost like a moonscape – dry and barren, with large rocky outcrops. more »

I am pleased to be traveling in Kenya this week to visit International Rescue Committee programs and meet some of the refugees we serve here. Our first stop was in Nairobi. In the community of Eastleigh, we met one of seven women's groups that the IRC supports as part of our work with urban refugees, primarily from Somalia. more »
