In Sierra Leone, basic health care is often unavailable and many die from easily preventable and treatable diseases. The IRC collaborates with local health centers to provide life-saving health care, including medicine, supplies and training of staff. Here, community members gather for a vaccination program against polio and a public health meeting. more »

In Africa a child dies of malaria every 45 seconds. The main reason for this is that health facilities are just too far from children's homes. To tackle this problem, the IRC has trained 11,000 villagers in six countries in Africa to treat children in their own communities -- not only for malaria, but also for other deadly conditions. more »

We were having a meeting and one of the participants noticed a tatoo that I have ... All were like, "Oh, we have a tatoo, too." ... They were calling me their American sister because I'm one of the few American black women that they've met ... I was excited. It was a bonding experience. So, sure, "Can I see your tatoo?" more »

Female Genital Mutilation used to be an accepted ritual for women in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It’s widely known now that the procedure can adversely impact the health of women and girls. But that doesn’t mean the tradition has ended. more »

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are on tour in the United States to raise awareness about the needs of refugees. The All Stars are donating $2 to the IRC for each copy of "Rise & Shine," their new album, sold through a link on our Web site. more »

We're excited that Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars and their record label Cumbancha are donating 100% of the proceeds from the early release of a new song to the IRC's earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. The song, "Global Threat," is from the forthcoming album Rise & Shine. more »
