The IRC is partnering with the UK-based charity Bidna Capoeira to teach capoeira — a challenging Afro-Brazilian sport and art form  — to at-risk children in West Bank refugee camps and schools. Proponents say it engenders a positive philosophy and outlook on life—one that is based on respect for the self and others.

IRC Planning to Distribute Water Tanks and Launch Hygiene Campaign in War-ravaged Gaza Strip

January 30, 2009 - The International Rescue Committee is preparing a relief effort that will help Palestinians in war-ravaged Gaza gain access to much-needed water. Alan Manski, the IRC’s senior emergency coordinator, who is planning the effort from Jerusalem, said that the IRC will provide water storage tanks to homes without access to potable water.

Gaza Crisis: IRC Funds Urgent Supplies for Overwhelmed Hospitals

January 8, 2009 - The International Rescue Committee is working with partners to deliver urgently needed supplies to hospitals and other centers providing humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.

With IRC funds, the Jordan River Foundation will be procuring desperately needed drugs, medical equipment and other vital items that are in short supply in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis worsens.

Meanwhile, the IRC is dispatching emergency aid specialists to the Palestinian Territories this week with a view toward expanding relief activities in the area.
