IRC Marks World Refugee Day

On Monday, June 20, the IRC celebrates World Refugee Day, established by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as an annual salute to the indomitable spirit and courage of the world's refugees.

IRC offices are marking the occasion with a variety of events on June 20 or later in the month.

IRC Honors Romeo Dallaire for Humanitarian Efforts

The International Rescue Committee has given its Distinguished Humanitarian Award to Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire, the former commander of the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda, for his extraordinary bravery during the 1994 genocide and for his humanitarian efforts since then. 

The award was announced at the IRC's annual benefit dinner November 10, 2004 in New York, following opening remarks by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
