The IRC and the Kite Runner

The International Rescue Committee UK is proud to be associated with Paramount Pictures’ UK release of The Kite Runner, in cinemas across Britain from 26th December. 

Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster brings to life Khaled Hosseini’s acclaimed bestselling novel, a profoundly moving tale of friendship, betrayal and redemption in a divided country.

In Afghanistan two decades of conflict have not only destroyed the country’s bricks and mortar, but have torn its social fabric. An entire generation of Afghans has grown up with virtually no education.

- 1 in 5 Afghans is a school-age child
- More than 50% of the population is under 18 years old
- 80% of students are in the 1st-4th grades
- 1.2 million girls remain out of school and at home
- 30% of children are working to support their families
- The adult illiteracy rate is 75% (86% for women)
