Mikhail Kozyrev can’t believe his good luck. He raps his knuckles on his wooden dining room table when he considers that, of all the jobs a refugee could get in recession-torn America, he landed one that fits his training in computer science. As a control desk operator at Threemile Canyon Farms outside of Boardman, Kosyrev helps run an enormous computer system, including one of the largest wireless networks in the world.

Once more a catastrophe is unfolding in the Horn of Africa and we’re transfixed by pictures of haunted faces and distended bellies, of huddles of humanity slumped in the sand, stoically waiting for help.

This week, President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged a total of $122 million to famine relief in East Africa, putting the total U.
