For years, the city’s strong economy, good quality affordable housing and supportive community created an especially favorable environment for refugee resettlement. Now, the recession has shifted that picture.

Famine was first identified in the Horn of Africa six months ago, but security fears tied to anti-government al Shabab fighters, who still control large swaths of south-central Somalia, have led many aid organisations to scale back their efforts.

Two years ago this week, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, bringing death and destruction on an unimaginable scale. Many hundreds of thousands of Haitians lost their lives or suffered terrible injuries on January 12th, 2010. Those who survived faced an uncertain future without homes, livelihoods, protection, or the basic services needed to survive.
